Tuesday Brussels announced that Ireland will have to recover the taxes that were not paid by Apple, a total value of around EUR 13 billion ( plus interest) . According to the information, the Commission considers illegal this "scheme" and notes that the Apple had tax benefits " undue " . According to European Commissioner Margrethe Vestager , "the United States can not give tax advantages to selected companies - that is illegal under EU rules on state aid ."

Ireland granted illegal tax benefits to Apple, which enabled it to pay substantially less tax than other businesses over many years

The Irish Government , through the Minister of Finance Michael Noonan in a statement to Reuters, have announced their disagreement on the case , noting that Apple had no state benefit.

I disagree profoundly with the Commission. The decision leaves me with no choice but to seek cabinet approval to appeal. This is necessary to defend the integrity of our tax system; to provide tax certainty to business; and to challenge the encroachment of EU state aid rules into the sovereign member state competence of taxation.
Apple also already ruled on this case and said that fulfilled the law and has said it will appeal the decision. This is an unprecedented fine and that, according to Apple " will have a profound and detrimental impact on investment and job creation ."

Recall that this is not the first time that large companies are ordered to pay taxes. Last year Amazon and McDonald's have to pay tax arrears in Luxembourg and Starbucks had to pay 30 million euros to the Netherlands .
