Linux: the success of open-source makes today 25 years

It was the first open-source software , but the first to prove that it was possible to be successful doing different in an industry that large corporations have dominated . On the back of the phenomenon a name : Linus Torvalds.

The year was 1991 and the Finn Linus Torvalds still embedded in a personal project that would change the world. On 25 August of that year, the student computer time at the University of Helsinki set without knowing the essence of Linux . With a message left on college BBS , Linus requested help from the local community of programmers with what he called "hobby" , something that would not become " big and professional like GNU " . At the time , the work was embryonic . It had only 10,000 lines of code ready to run just a specific model of hard drive and Torvalds did not recognize you enough potential to be more than an interesting theory , able to arouse the academic interest of other students . Fortunately, things did not go as anticipated.

25 years later " the portable operating system " , as he called it Torvalds in his dissertation , is an essential part of the technological universe that mix in daily. Currently , Linux core serves to support hundreds of different distributions at 10 and initial thousand lines of code, joined over 22 million written daily all over the world , more than 13,500 different programmers . All this collaborative process has generated undeniable quality content , but contrary to what the common user think , Linux is not only to boost alternative operating systems that only the most knowledgeable information technology have on their computers. Out of the consumer focus of attention , the core Linus Torvalds started creating in April 1995 is now the engine of many data centers , computer services in the financial industry , supercomputers and even Android itself.

In this case , the open-source is the basis for success and hence the reason why the system is kept updated a hard pace to keep up. According to the latest report from the Linux Foundation , there are an average of about 7.8 new patches per hour and about 4,600 lines of code are added daily to its core . However , contrary to what was common practice in the early years of life , Linux is now , increasingly , professional collaboration product of numerous companies that post workers to work in the program code . Between 2012 and 2016 , the percentage of volunteers has dropped from 14.6 % to 7.7 % and large technology corporations gained ground in this area , so that the first two places on the podium collaborations , now belongs to Intel and Red hat. the Samsung comes in sixth and Google in 11th .

Currently, both Torvalds and his team are often removed from the production code and make their craft curation and filter the changes that are being suggested daily by programmers worldwide . At 25, the dream seems to be alive and healthy enough to endure many others. Disruptive idea that Torvalds materialized for two and a half decades in the Finnish capital won a place in the market and to the interest of its biggest competitors with a communicant logic that has contrasted with the more restrictive proposals of major technological . This marriage with the public have come out successful works that eventually give rise to new business.
