German law prohibits data sharing scheme between Facebook and WhatsApp & Xiaomi presents two new smartphones and is facing Apple and Samsung

German law prohibits data sharing scheme between Facebook and WhatsApp

The German authority for data protection ordered Facebook to eliminate all data collected on German WhatsApp users. According to the local authority, the German law prevents the sharing of data between platforms.

After announcing sharing WhatsApp user data with Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg is now grappling with the first legal constraint to the scheme.

In a statement issued Tuesday, the German authority for data protection says the plan violates national law of digital privacy and orders the social network delete all the data already collected the German WhatsApp users.

According to Commissioner Hamburg for data protection, Johannes Caspar, "This order protects nearly 35 million users" that, to date, have not expressly authorized and necessary for the storage of data across platforms.

It is recalled that, with the new framework for sharing data between WhatsApp and Facebook, the social network is empowered to collect phone numbers from messaging app. An authorization, says Facebook, can help create more targeted advertising experience and more appropriate friends suggestions.

The partnership has been under fire from users and other regulators of privacy, especially in Europe. Earlier this month, Margrethe Vestager, European commissioner for competition, confessed that he had several questions to ask Facebook following this same scheme.
